The short answer

Those assume the unit is packed to a normal density. A 10x10 holding nothing but a bedroom set and twelve boxes will price lower, item by item, and you get whichever figure is smaller. The minimum per visit is $75.

Where Sacramento keeps its storage

The facilities in this metro cluster along the industrial and arterial corridors rather than in the neighborhoods: the Power Inn Road corridor and the industrial belt south of it, along Auburn Boulevard and Watt Avenue, out along Folsom Boulevard toward Rancho Cordova, and in the newer suburban rings around Elk Grove, Roseville and Natomas.

That geography matters in one specific way. Almost none of them are climate controlled, and the ones that are cost enough that most household units are not in them. Which brings us to the real problem with storage in this valley.

What a Sacramento summer does to a storage unit

A metal-roofed, roll-up-door unit in this climate behaves like a garage, only worse, because it is sealed and nobody opens it for months.

Through a run of 100 to 108-degree days, the interior sits well above ambient for weeks at a time. What that produces, reliably:

• Cardboard boxes collapsed at the corners, so the stack has become one object.
• Plastic bins gone chalky and brittle, failing at the handles on the first lift.
• Foam in mattresses, cushions and packing crumbling.
• Particleboard furniture swollen and separated at every joint.
• Photographs and documents stuck together.
• Candles, vinyl records and anything adhesive simply gone.

The honest consequence: people arrive at a unit expecting a day of difficult decisions and find that most of the decisions have already been made for them. The load is usually bigger than expected and the keep pile is usually smaller.

The unit that has been paid for since 2022

This is the most common version of the job in this metro, and it usually has a Bay Area origin.

Somebody moves up from San Francisco, Oakland or San Jose, the move happens faster than planned, and a unit is rented for what is meant to be two months of overflow. Two or three years later it is still on the card, and nobody has opened it since the week they filled it.

Do the arithmetic on what has been spent against what is in there. In almost every case the answer settles the question immediately, and the remaining decision is only whether to book one visit at the facility or move the contents home first. Book it at the facility. Moving it twice is the expensive mistake.

What facilities expect on the day

• Gate access. Codes, and gate hours that are usually shorter than you think, particularly on Sundays. Confirm the window before booking a slot.
• Your presence or written authorisation. Most facilities will not let a crew into a unit without one or the other on file. Arrange it with the office in advance.
• Elevators and carts in multi-story facilities, which are shared and which get busy at weekends. A weekday morning is a materially faster job.
• Broom clean. Nearly every facility requires the unit swept and empty before the rental terminates. Sweeping is included in the price.
• A move-out notice. Do not clear the unit and assume the billing stops. Give the office notice in whatever form they require, and get the confirmation.

Auction and abandoned units

If you bought a unit at auction, the job is different in one respect only: you have a deadline set by the facility, usually short, to empty it completely.

Pull what you want first, on your own time, then book the clear for the remainder. Price it as a volume load, because auction units are never sorted and never will be. A quarter truck is $241, a half is $431, a full load is $732.

Two practical notes. Personal documents and photographs turn up in these units constantly, and the decent thing is to set them aside for the facility rather than send them to disposal. And check for hazardous material before the crew arrives: paint, pool chemicals and propane cylinders are common in long-abandoned units and none of them go on a general truck.

Booking it

Open the door, stand back, and take one photograph of the whole unit plus one of anything large. That is enough to price it. Tell us the facility, the unit number, the gate hours and the access arrangement.

Book a weekday morning if you can, and in summer take the earliest slot available. A sealed unit in a triple-digit week is hotter inside than the parking lot, and the price is identical at eight in the morning.
