The short answer

What is left after a move is almost always a quarter to a half truck. $241 or $431. If it is only two or three named items, itemize instead: Sofa $126, Mattress + Box Spring Set $143, Dresser (Standard) $126, Dining Table (2-4 Seat) $103. You get whichever total is lower, and the per-visit minimum is $75.

Sacramento moves have a shape

Three big flows, and they are not the same job.

Moving in from the Bay Area. The single biggest inbound pattern in this metro. People arrive from a San Francisco or Oakland apartment into an Elk Grove, Natomas or Folsom house, and discover that roughly a third of what they packed does not belong in the new place: undersized rugs, a bar-height table with no bar, storage furniture bought for a 600-square-foot flat. That gets cleared out in the first two weeks, not the first weekend.

Moving within the metro. Midtown flat to a Land Park or Curtis Park bungalow, or the standard suburban step from Citrus Heights to Roseville. Short haul, so people take too much, so they clear it out on the other end.

Moving out and leaving. A lease ending along Folsom Boulevard near Sac State, a house sale in East Sac, a retirement to the foothills. Here the deadline is real and someone else is inspecting.

Two dates that rule this city

The end of May. Sac State empties, Davis turns over across the Causeway, and every complex from La Riviera to Natomas flips units in the same week. Movers, trucks and disposal slots all compress at once.

The last three days of any month. Standard lease-end crunch, but harder here because so much of the metro is rental tract housing with the same turn date.

If your walkthrough is on the 31st, do not book your haul for the 30th. Book it for the 27th and live with a bare apartment for four days.

What actually gets left behind

  • The sofa that will not fit up the new stairs. Sofa $126, Sectional Sofa (3-Piece) $185.
  • The mattress you have already replaced. Queen $103, Mattress + Box Spring Set $143.
  • Flat-pack furniture that will not survive a second disassembly. Bookcase, Particleboard / Flat-pack $100.
  • The desk and chair from a home office that is now a spare room. Desk (Standard) $83, Office Chair $61.
  • Rugs sized for the old place. Area Rug, Large $68, Area Rug, Small $33.
  • Patio furniture that is not coming. Patio Table $89, Patio Chair $30 each.
  • The contents of the coat closet. Bag of Clothes $35.
  • Moving debris itself: boxes, packing paper, tape. Contractor Bag $41 each, or bag counts from 10 Bags of Debris $132 upward.

A worked example

Two-bedroom in Natomas, family moving to a bigger house in Elk Grove, leaving the old bedroom set and the office.

Mattress and Box Spring Set $143 + Bed Frame (Standard) $68 + Dresser (Standard) $126 + Desk (Standard) $83 + Office Chair $61 + Bookcase, Particleboard $100 = $581.

That is above the half-truck rate of $431, so it books at $431.

Smaller one. Midtown studio, tenant leaving a sofa and a mattress: Sofa $126 + Mattress, Queen $103 = $229. Under the quarter-truck rate of $241, so it books at $229.

Getting the deposit back

The cleanout is not the same job as the clean, and the order matters. Haul first, clean second. Nobody can clean a floor that still has a bed frame on it, and a cleaner working around furniture will charge you for the inconvenience and still leave marks.

  • Book the haul at least two days before the cleaner.
  • Photograph the empty unit yourself, the same day it is emptied.
  • Check the balcony, the carport space, the storage cage and the breezeway closet. Garden complexes off Watt and Howe are full of forgotten storage lockers.
  • If the complex needs a certificate of insurance, ask when you book.

If you are selling rather than renting

Different sequencing again. The haul goes before the photographer, not before the close.

An East Sac or Land Park house that photographs empty sells differently than one that photographs half-packed. Clear the garage and the side yard as well, because in this city buyers look at both, and a side yard with ten years of leaning lumber reads as deferred maintenance whether or not it is.

If the house is a Streng or a mid-century in Arden, sell or consign the furniture rather than hauling it. That market is genuinely active here.

Booking it

Photos of what is staying behind, the floor it is on, and whether the truck works the street, the alley or the complex lot. The total comes back before dispatch and includes carry-out, loading, hauling and disposal. No stair fee, no elevator fee, no same-day surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to clear out what the movers left?

Most move-out leftovers are a quarter truck at $241 or a half at $431. A couple of named items can be less, and a sofa plus a queen mattress is $126 + $103 = $229.

Can you come the same day as my walkthrough?

We can, but do not plan it that way, especially in late May. Book two or three days before the inspection so a delay on your end does not become a deposit problem.

Do I need to carry anything to the curb?

No. The price covers carry-out from inside the unit, on any floor, including third-floor walk-ups in the garden complexes off Howe Avenue.

I just moved here from the Bay Area and half my furniture does not fit. What now?

Very common. Price the pieces individually: a sofa is $126, a sectional three-piece is $185, a large area rug is $68. If it is more than four or five pieces, the quarter-truck rate at $241 usually wins.

Can you handle the moving boxes and packing paper too?

Yes. Contractor bags are $41 each, or use the bag counts, starting at $132 for 10 bags.
