What a Sacramento summer does to your garage and patio, and what clearing it costs

The short answer

Nothing about the heat changes the price. There is no summer surcharge and no heat surcharge. A garage clear-out is $241 for a quarter truck, $431 for a half, $587 for three-quarters and $732 for a full load. A patio set is Patio Table $89 plus Patio Chair $30 each.

What the heat changes is the condition of everything you own that lives outside the air conditioning, and the time of day the work should happen.

The numbers on a Sacramento garage

A run of 100 to 108-degree afternoons is a normal July here, and it does not cool off much overnight until the Delta breeze arrives in the evening, if it arrives. An uninsulated attached garage with a metal door facing west runs well above the outside temperature and holds it. Inside a closed garage on a Sacramento August afternoon, 115 to 125 degrees is ordinary.

That is not storage. That is a low oven, running for three months a year, for as many years as you have owned the house.

What has already failed in there

• Plastic storage bins. Repeated heat cycling makes polypropylene brittle. They look fine and the handles snap on the first lift. This is the single most common thing crews find.
• Cardboard. Corners collapse, tape releases, and a stack four boxes high has become one box.
• Foam. Cushions, camping mats, car seats, packing foam. It crumbles.
• Particleboard shelving and flat-pack furniture. Swells, delaminates, lets go at every screw hole.
• Adhesives and paint. Separated, skinned over, no longer usable.
• Rubber and vinyl. Hoses, pool toys, tarps, extension cords. Perished and cracking.
• The second refrigerator. Compressors fail against a 120-degree ambient. Most garage fridge calls in this city come in September, about two weeks after they actually died.

The practical upshot: people expect a garage cleanout to be full of hard decisions, and it usually is not. Most of it is already waste.

What the patio looks like after ten summers

Sacramento UV is relentless from May to October and it destroys outdoor furniture faster than most people expect.

Sling fabric on aluminum frames goes chalky and tears at the rail. Resin wicker whitens and splits. Powder-coated steel holds up better until the coating fails, then the frame rusts from the inside. Umbrella fabric fades through, and the mechanism seizes. Cushions left out are done in two seasons.

The dangerous things people store in a hot garage

Set these aside before any pickup, because they do not go on a general truck and they are genuinely worse in this climate:

• Propane cylinders. Spare barbecue tanks in a closed 120-degree garage. Take these to an exchange or a proper drop-off.
• Aerosols. Paint, solvents, lubricants. Pressure rises with temperature.
• Pool chemicals. Chlorine tablets and acid stored together in heat is a real hazard, not a theoretical one.
• Car batteries and lithium packs. Old e-bike and scooter batteries especially.
• Paint, thinners and pesticides. Household hazardous waste channels. Check your county's current drop-off arrangements.

Work the clock, not the calendar

The single best piece of advice for a summer cleanout in this valley is about timing, and it is free.

• Start at first light. Six to ten in the morning is genuinely comfortable here even in August. Crews work those hours in summer for a reason.
• Do not plan an afternoon session. One to six pm inside a closed garage is not a work window.
• The evening Delta breeze is a trap. It is pleasant, and by the time it arrives the disposal sites are shut and you are committed to a loaded vehicle overnight.
• Open the garage door and the side door the night before. Cross ventilation drops the morning starting temperature meaningfully.
• Or wait for October. The price is identical in October and the day is four hours longer.

A worked example

Two-car garage in Citrus Heights, cleared in September after the fridge died.

Plus roughly thirty bins and boxes that have gone brittle, which is where the volume ladder takes over. A garage like that typically lands on a 3/4 load at $587, and you pay whichever is lower between the itemized total and the volume rate.

Booking it

Three photos from the garage door and one of the patio is enough. The number comes back before a truck leaves and it includes loading, hauling and disposal.

Ask for the earliest slot in the day from June through September. It costs the same and everybody has a better morning.
