How to get rid of a refrigerator in Sacramento

The short answer

Carry-out from any floor, loading, hauling, refrigerant recovery and disposal are all inside those numbers. There is no stair fee and no refrigerant surcharge. The minimum per visit is $75, and every unit above is already past it.

The Sacramento garage fridge

This is the defining version of the job in this metro. Almost every long-held house in Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Fair Oaks, Orangevale, the Pocket, Elk Grove and out toward Wilton has a second refrigerator in the garage, and a good share also have a chest freezer next to it.

They die in August. An uninsulated Sacramento garage runs above 110 degrees for weeks in a triple-digit run, and a compressor rated for a kitchen is being asked to reject heat into an environment hotter than the air outside. Calls about dead garage fridges arrive in September, roughly two weeks after the failure, once somebody has opened the door and understood what happened.

Three practical consequences. Empty it as soon as it fails, not when you get round to it. Do not plug in a replacement in the same spot without thinking about ventilation. And defrost it properly before the pickup, because a failed freezer that has been closed for two weeks is its own kind of experience.

Prep, and the two-day rule

1. Empty it completely, including the door shelves and the ice maker bin.
2. Defrost it two days before the pickup, not the night before. A chest freezer that has run for fifteen years holds an astonishing amount of ice, and it does not clear in eight hours.
3. Put towels down. On a garage slab this does not matter. On a hardwood floor in a Land Park kitchen it matters enormously.
4. Unplug it and coil the cord.
5. Turn off and disconnect the water line if it has an ice maker or a dispenser. The shutoff is usually behind the unit or under the sink.
6. Leave the doors on unless it is going to sit outside overnight, in which case take them off or strap them shut. Child entrapment is the reason that rule exists and it is not a formality.

Why the free routes mostly say no

Scrap collectors. A scrapper working an alley in Oak Park or off Franklin Boulevard will take a dryer and leave the fridge. They cannot process the refrigerant, so the unit has negative value to them. Expect it to sit there.

Charities. Will not take a used refrigerator, essentially anywhere, on liability and efficiency grounds.

Municipal bulky collection. Appliances with sealed systems are handled differently from a sofa. Check whether your jurisdiction includes them and what the lead time is.

Utility recycling offers. Programs for old second refrigerators open and close over time in California. Check whether one is currently running and what it requires before you plan around it.

Retailer haul-away. The best free option, and the one with the hardest deadline. It has to be on the order when you buy the new unit, it covers only the unit being replaced, and it is not negotiable on the doorstep.

Refrigerant, briefly

Federal rules require refrigerant to be recovered by a certified technician before the shell is processed. That is exactly why so many of the routes above go quiet.

It is handled on our side at facilities equipped for recovery, and there is no refrigerant line, EPA fee or handling charge on the price list. $164 for a standard refrigerator is the whole number.

Do not attempt to vent or cut a line yourself. It is illegal, it is dangerous, and it makes the unit harder to dispose of properly rather than easier.

Getting it out of the house

A standard fridge weighs enough that two people and a proper appliance dolly are the floor, not the ceiling, of what is required.

On the grid, the kitchen in a Victorian or a converted flat is often at the back, with a narrow service door onto a side yard and then an alley gate. The unit may have to come out through the front instead, down the porch steps. Say which route is realistic when you book.

In a bungalow in East Sac or Curtis Park, the back step down to the yard is usually the tight point, not the doorway.

In the suburbs, it is a straight run out of an attached garage and access is a non-issue.

Measure the doorway if the fridge is a french door model. They are wider than people assume, and the handles usually come off with a hex key, which buys an inch either side.

Worked examples

Kitchen swap in Natomas, garage unit going too. Refrigerator (Side-by-Side / French Door) $183 + Refrigerator (Standard) $164 = $347. Above the 3/8 truck rate of $338, so it books at $338.

Orangevale garage cleared of cold storage. Refrigerator (Standard) $164 + Freezer (Chest) $146 = $310. Above the quarter truck at $241, so it books at $241.

Student flat near Sac State at the end of May. Mini Fridge $115 + Microwave (Countertop) $30 = $145, which is over the $75 minimum and under $241, so $145 is the price.

Booking it

Tell us the type, whether it is emptied and defrosted, which room it is in, and whether the truck works the street, the alley or the driveway. The number comes back before a truck leaves.

In summer, take the earliest slot. Moving an appliance out of a closed garage at two in the afternoon during a 106-degree week is not something to do to yourself or anyone else, and it costs exactly the same at seven in the morning.
